Last night’s episode of The Blacklist was filled with quite a lot of flashbacks; and I guess after nearly two full seasons on the air it was time for the typical plot device to be used, right? Every show, at some point, has a flashback episode, allowing the viewers to relive what has come to pass, being reminded of the dire consequences for which the characters of a particular show have faced and how it all led up to the current circumstances.

Where Elizabeth Keen (series lead Megan Boone) is concerned in this instance is that Detective Martin Wilcox (guest star Michael Kostroff), being the seemingly pit bull that he is, has sunk his teeth firmly into the murder investigation of the harbor master. The harbor master who was actually killed by Liz’s ex-husband Tom Keen (series regular Ryan Eggold), but whose death is being blamed on Liz.

Despite the efforts of the Deputy Attorney General (recurring guest star Adriane Lenox), the presiding judge – Judge Richard Denner (guest star John Finn) – in the grand jury case investigating the harbor master’s death, the very case that is being pushed by Det. Wilcox and his boss (guest star Michael Beach), demands to meet with Liz in his private chambers to determine if the government’s motion that the case should be covered under national security concerns are valid or not.

Through an elaborate course of events – as played out in those aforementioned flashbacks – Liz begins to paint a picture for the judge of how the super-secret task force for which she was recruited came to be due to Raymond “Red” Reddington (series lead James Spader) turning himself into the FBI and demanding that he would only talk to Elizabeth Keen.

While Liz gives the judge unexpected access to the backstory of Red’s demands, the cases he has brought to the FBI and the seedier side of what the task force has dealt with over the past 18 months, the judge clearly has his doubts as to the believability of Liz’s “story”. I guess a man who is known to question the government and expects transparency at all levels of the government would have reason to distrust what is being told to him, but how can he hear all that Liz shared and not believe that it’s true? After all, you can’t make that shit up if you tried? It’s all so far-fetched and unbelievable that it should be a TV show (okay it is and this is all to set the stage for a much bigger part of the overall story, I’m sure but I couldn’t resist).

Copper (series regular Harry Lennix) even seemed to jump on the bandwagon, although he did tell Liz that he would not perjure himself to save her ass; and while he didn’t necessarily do that (not entirely anyway), he did leave it up to interpretation. And, the judge is not going to just settle for the story he has been told. Especially not after Det. Wilcox and his boss show up in his office with a spent bullet casing found on the ship where the harbor master was killed. A used bullet that traces back to Liz’s gun that has trace blood of Samoan (recurring guest star Dante Nero) on it. Liz is going to be in some serious trouble.

Enter, once again, Reddington, who is on the manhunt for “The Major”. A man who runs a finishing school (of sorts) where boys and girls – mainly orphans, outcasts and delinquents – with superior intelligence and a tendency to display sociopathic tendencies are trained and turned into attractive, cultivated and intelligent adults who are capable of horrible things. Sound familiar? Sound like one Tom Keen? Yep! The Major is actually Bill McCready (guest star Lance Henrickson), who was seen – thanks to yet another flashback – recruiting a young boy named Jacob (guest star Christopher Dylan White), who grows up to be none other than Tom Keen.

Tom Keen has jumped to the top of Red’s Blacklist in order to save Liz from this grand jury investigation; but the FBI team must first kidnap the Deputy Minister of Malaysia (guest star Raul Aranas), who is actually undercover in that level of government for a cartel all thanks to Bill’s “school”. Red gets exactly what he wants – Samar (recurring guest star Mozhan Marno) and Ressler (series lead Diego Klattenhoff) kidnap the Minister right off the streets of DC, Red gets to interrogate the Minister and, in the end, meet with The Major; and eventually getting a lead on Tom Keen.

How this will all continue to play out will obviously be seen in next week’s episode when Tom Keen is the target. And how Red will get Tom out of Germany, where the man is on his latest “case” working to infiltrate a modern-day Nazi group is anyone’s guess. But the more pressing matter where this episode is concerned is the following exchange between the usually quiet Dembe (recurring guest star Hisham Tawfiq) and Red, regarding the latter telling Liz the truth about Tom:

Dembe: “You should have told her some time ago”.
Red: “I don’t know how to do that”.
Dembe: “Yes, you do. You tell her the truth by telling her everything”.
Red: “I don’t think I can do that”.
Dembe: “Maybe you should stop thinking about it and do it”.

Yes! Please do tell Liz the truth about everything, Red. Or at least do us the favor of telling us one truth, anything actually. Why did you hire Tom in the first place? Why did you select Liz to be the only person you would talk to? What connection do you have with her childhood? Just give us (and Liz) something to work with.

What were your thoughts on last night’s episode? Please share them below.

The next new episode of the second season of ‘The Blacklist’ will air on Thursday, March 19 at 9/8c on NBC.
