CHICAGO (AP)—Chicago Blackhawks forward Daniel Carcillo will undergo reconstructive left knee surgery Tuesday, sidelining him for the rest of the year.
Carcillo was helped off the ice after he launched Edmonton’s Tom Gilbert into the boards during the second period of the Oilers’ 4-3 victory Jan. 2. The 26-year-old Carcillo received a major boarding penalty and a game misconduct for the hit, and was later suspended for seven games.
Team physician Dr. Michael Terry anticipates a “full return” for Carcillo in six months.
Carcillo had two goals, nine assists and 82 penalty minutes in 28 games in his first season with Chicago.
The Blackhawks also activated forward Marcus Kroger from injured reserve Friday and sent forward Ben Smith to Rockford of the American Hockey League.

O president da National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety era outro. Agora é o Shanahan, que anda a fazer um grande trabalho.

Last night, CSN Philadelphia caught up with Lauren Pronger — wife of injured Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger — at the inaugural Flyers Wives Fashion Show. The event was supposed to be hosted by both Lauren and Chris, but the latter was unable to attend after having “a bad day” in his recovery from concussion (as tweeted by NHL.com’s Adam Kimelman.)
The effect concussions have on players’ families is something PHT profiled during our December spotlight on concussion impact in the NHL. Specifically, a quote from Pat LaFontaine’s wife, Marybeth, on how difficult it was to watch her husband struggle with the injury.
“I would walk into a room, and he would be crying. He cried a lot. Or he would be holding his head from the migraine headaches. They were terrible. He wouldn’t leave the house for a week. He wouldn’t change his clothes, wouldn’t shower. It was all the classic signs of depression. I thought he was having a nervous breakdown.”
The Philadelphia captain recently spoke out about his difficulties adjusting to life with a concussion (and without hockey).
“It is very, very tough right now,” he said via the Flyers’ official Twitter account. “I don’t feel well and it hurts so much not to be playing.”

The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed star winger James Neal to a $30-million, six-year extension, the team announced Sunday.
Neal was slated for restricted free agency July 1. The new deal will pay him on average $5 million a season, a raise from the $2.875 million his current deal averages per year.
Neal is tied for third in the NHL with 30 goals in 58 games this season.
