"As the calendar turned from December 31, 1998 into January 1, 1999, there was still a lot of optimism in World Championship Wrestling. After all, 1998 had been a spectacular year, and even though Vince McMahon's WWF had managed to catch back up with the company, it was still doing monster business across the board. Pay-Per-View buyrates were relatively high, attendance and merchandise sales were through the roof, and - perhaps most crucially to Eric Bischoff - the all-important TV ratings had managed to stay competitive. In fact, WCW was competing heavily on all fronts against Vince McMahon, and it was pretty much expected that the promotion were here to stay. Besides, the only thing that could kill WCW would be WCW itself, right?"

I got a phone call from Ted Turner asking me to join him.
Soon I realized that this would be a year to turn the page in WCW's history.

Ted Turner began by congratulating me for the fantastic year we had, but noted that our auditors are concerned about the rising of personnel costs. The use of wrestlers such as Hulk Hogan, Kevin Nash, Randy Savage and Scott Hall, though not contractually linked to WCW, have made the company's accounts slip.
Ted Turner also said that they have accepted a very lucrative proposal for Hulk Hogan to participate in a mega film production that will start shooting in 1999, so there is a need to create a new star that can replace Hulk Hogan in his absence.
The meeting ended with me questioning whether Ted Turner would give me carte blanche to make the necessary changes, and he told me that he trusted me with this task.
