According to one person close to the situation, the obvious question this brings up has not been considered.
As of this week, Roman Reigns was still scheduled to win the WWE title at WrestleMania, whether it be from Brock Lesnar, Seth Rollins or even John Cena.
From television, all signs point to it being Rollins. It was to be Lesnar at first, but if he isn’t going to sign a new deal and WrestleMania is his final show, it’s too big a risk that the crowd may crap on his leaving the way they did at WrestleMania in 2004, which would not be good for Reigns’ scheduled crowning moment.
But Bryan being in the Rumble creates a second issue. If Bryan is in the Rumble, particularly it being his first match back, he will be the crowd favorite to win by a large margin. He doesn’t have to win, as it’s easy heat to create a really hated heel if they eliminate him, but even then, that should be the final elimination. But if it’s going to be a babyface winning and that person is going to challenge for the title at WrestleMania, giving the slot to anyone short of Bryan, or perhaps a debuting Sting (who isn’t expected to even be in the match), has a great risk of having the fans turn on it exactly like they did with Batista last year.
Plus, the crowd’s reactions to Reigns have been lukewarm, and in watching it doesn’t feel like the crowd is accepting him as the right guy for the position. On 12/29's Raw, a Reigns vs. Rollins match which could have been a preview of the Mania main event, got very little crowd reaction. While many championed Dean Ambrose for the spot, his crowd reactions haven’t been at that level either, although he was a better worker, and a better promo, and ultimately would have been better in the position.
Bryan can be in that position, but he’s also not the person the company wants there. But the Bryan chase of the title was the big story for Mania in 2014, and really, saved the show. His title run, meant to be four plus months, long enough so it wouldn’t be a fluke, but not a dynasty, was over prematurely when his neck problems worsened.
If Bryan’s body holds up, a match with Rollins for the title could be a classic on the WrestleMania stage.
